Smart and Wi-Fi Irrigation Controllers

Choose, install and set up a weather-based controller that adjusts watering with the season.

Why a self-adjusting controller fits Surprise

Surprise's own watering table asks an owner to change intervals four times a year, and few do. A weather-based controller makes those changes itself. EPA WaterSense describes weather-based models that use local weather and landscape conditions and soil moisture models that skip watering when the soil is still wet, and estimates that replacing a clock timer with a labeled model can save a household up to 15,000 gallons a year.

The City of Surprise offers a rebate toward one. Under the parameters for the July 1, 2026 to June 1, 2027 program, the controller must be WaterSense labeled and listed as weather-based on the EPA site, the applicant must own the property within the city, residential owners are limited to one controller, the receipt must be itemized and paid, and the city inspects the installation. Controllers not installed and inspected by June 1, 2027 are not paid. Installation labor is excluded.

Setup decides the savings

A smart controller only saves water when each zone is described accurately: plant type, soil, slope, sun and the nozzle or emitter on it. A drip zone of desert shrubs and a spray zone of grass must never share settings. Wi-Fi models also need a usable signal where the controller hangs, which in many Surprise homes means a garage wall some distance from the router.

Installation moves and labels each station wire, checks every station runs, and confirms what the unit does if it loses its network. The first weeks deserve a watch: if a station runs far more or less than the city's table suggests, adjust that zone rather than overriding the whole schedule. A smart controller cannot fix a seeping valve or broken head, so repair the field first. Related pages: irrigation controller repair and the seasonal irrigation tune-up.

Questions about Smart and Wi-Fi Irrigation Controllers

EPA WaterSense explains that weather-based controllers use local weather and landscape conditions to set the schedule, while soil moisture-based controllers measure moisture in the soil and skip watering when it is not needed. Both can carry the WaterSense label after independent certification.
