Repair cracked laterals and pressurized mainline, from the break back to a sound joint.
Irrigation pipe comes in two kinds. Laterals run from a zone valve to its heads and hold pressure only while that zone runs. The mainline runs from the supply to the valves and usually stays pressurized all the time. A cracked lateral leaks during its cycle and leaves the heads beyond it weak. A mainline break leaks all day and night, and in Surprise that matters twice: it wastes water continuously, and the city's water conservation ordinance expects repair steps to begin no later than 72 hours after learning about a break.
Desert soil makes the break hard to find. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension describes caliche as soil cemented by calcium carbonate that restricts water movement, so a leak can run along the trench and surface well away from the crack. Before digging, the leak is narrowed by station timing, a meter check with everything off, and soil probing.
The break is exposed by hand, with care where other utilities share the ground. Pipe is cut back past any splitting to clean, round PVC and joined with fittings rated for the line. A slip coupling suits a short break; a run with several cracks or roots through it is replaced. Mainline work starts with the supply shut off and ends with the line flushed, because grit loosened by a repair lodges in valves and nozzles downstream.
The repair is proven before backfill: the mainline is repressurized and watched, and laterals are run with their station. Backfill goes back in compacted layers so the trench does not sink, and rock or turf is replaced. Stations that had extra minutes to make up for lost pressure get them taken off.
