What to know about irrigation controller repair in Surprise

A controller that skips stations, runs at noon or waters during a storm is the part of a Surprise system the city's code names directly. Section 58-658 of the water conservation ordinance lists failure to maintain automatic timing systems as a cause of unnecessary water waste.

What a Surprise controller is being asked to follow

The city's Landscape Watering Guidelines split the year into four periods, March to May, May to October, October to December and December to March, and give a different number of days between waterings for each plant type in each period. Warm-season grass, for example, moves from a few days apart in summer to weeks apart in winter, and cool-season grass needs no water at all from May to October. They also advise watering before sunrise. A controller that holds one program all year cannot follow that table. The Arizona Municipal Water Users Association suggests adjusting schedules at least four times a year, which lines up with the city's four columns. Repair work in Surprise therefore usually ends with a program check as well as a hardware fix.

In Surprise the program check also covers the time of day. The city guidelines recommend watering before sunrise, and University of Arizona Extension publication AZ1048 suggests watering between 3 and 8 a.m. in the warm months to reduce evaporation and wind loss. A controller whose clock has drifted, or one reset to a factory default after a power loss, often starts stations in the afternoon. The station may work perfectly and still waste water because of the hour. Checking the clock, the start times and the season setting belongs in every repair, not as an extra.

Monsoon storms and the controller

The National Weather Service Phoenix office defines the monsoon as June 15 through September 30 and warns of downbursts with winds of 50 mph or more, dust storms, lightning and heavy rain. For a controller, that means power interruptions that reset clocks on older models, rain that should pause watering, and wind that knocks heads off line. A controller that loses its date after an outage may start running stations at the wrong hour. The monsoon controller settings guide covers what to check after a storm.

Fix the timer or replace it

If the controller itself is failing, the City of Surprise FY2027 rebate parameters include a WaterSense-labeled irrigation controller. The model must be listed as weather-based on the EPA WaterSense site, residential properties are limited to one controller, the applicant must own a property within the city of Surprise, and the city inspects the installation; controllers not installed and inspected by June 1, 2027 are not paid. Those terms change each fiscal year, so read the current parameters before buying. A repair visit should still separate the two questions. If a zone fails because the field wire or valve is bad, a new controller will not help. Test each station manually, then compare it with the schedule. If the manual run works and the program does not, the fault is in the controller or its settings. The general method is on the controller repair service page. For a replacement, see smart controllers in Surprise and the Surprise smart controller rebate guide. A station that will not shut off even with the controller unplugged is a valve problem; see valve and solenoid repair in Surprise. Other city services are on the Surprise hub. Winter programs are covered in winter watering, frost and overseeding in Surprise.

Questions about Irrigation Controller Repair

The usual causes are an extra start time, a second program left active, a clock reset after a power loss, or an incorrect date. Write down every program, start time and runtime before changing anything, then clear what is not needed and run each station once to confirm.
